"Desde el año 1990 hemos incorporado la Unidad Temática "Fisiología metabólica de los rumiantes" al curso curricular de Fisiología de la Facultad de Veterinaria. Se buscó con esto suplir una carencia en la formación básica de nuestros estudiantes, ya que la enseñanza clásica del metabolismo intermediario toma como modelo al animal monogástrico y, muchas veces, al hombre. En las especies rumiantes, este metabolismo presenta muchas particularidades, determinando importantes diferencias que justifican su estudio específico. El conocimiento preciso del metabolismo del rumiante es necesario para la aplicación racional de las normas de alimentación del ganado en diferentes estadios fisiológicos y, en forma más amplia, como base del aprendizaje de la Nutrición general. Es además fundamental para comprender la génesis de las enfermedades metabólicas asociadas a las altas producciones (toxemia, cetosis)..."

Indice resumido: Breves nociones sobre lípidos. Digestión y absorción de lípidos en el rumiante. Transporte de lípídos por la sangra y principales vías del metabolísmo lípidico. La neoglucogénesis en el rumiante. Lipogénesis/lipolisis en el tejido adiposo del rumiante. Lipogénesis de la glándula mamaria del rumiante. La lipomovilización durante el periparto y la lactación. El matabolismo proteico en los rumiantes.

Uterine involution time and ovarían activity were stud-ied in autumn- and spring-lambing ewes. Macroscopic uterine involution was completed earlier in autumn-lambing ewes and this can be related with an earlier resumption of ovarían endocrine activity. The uterus of spring-lambing ewes reached a smaller size, similar to that found in anestrous ewes. Weaning immediately after parturition did not affect the time of uterine involution.

Sci. 76: 473-475. The effect of high progesterone lev­éis in the growth of the largest (dominant) follicle of Wave 1 was monitored by daily ultrasonography in Corriedale ewes. Progesterone treatment decreased the growing rate (P < 0.05), lengthened the static phase (P < 0.05) and tended to decrease the máximum diameter attained by the dominant follicle (P < 0.06).

To study the ovarían response of seasonally anestrous Corriedale ewes to a gonadotropin releasing hormone challenge, daily transrectal ultrasonography or laparotomy were performed and luteinizing hormone and progesterone pro files were determined. Of the responding ewes (8/17), three ovulated and formed a healthy corpus luteum and five formed large luteinized follicular cysts that secreted low progesterone levéis for 2 to 3 d. Therefore, the study of progesterone profiles alone could lead to erroneous interpretations of the ovarían response to GnRH challenge in sheep.

Viñoles, C. and Rubianes, E. 1998. Origin of the preovulatory follicle after induced luteolysis during the early luteal phase in ewes. Can. J. Anim. Sci. 78: 429-^431. The origin of the preovulatory follicle (POF) was determined by daily transrectal ultra-sonographic examinations in ewes given PGF2a on day 5 (n - 8) or day 9 (n = 8) post-ovulation. In all day-9 ewes, the POF orig­inated from wave 2 while in the day-5 group it originated from wave 1 (n = 5) or wave 2 (n = 3). When the POF originated from wave 2 in day-5 ewes, the dominant follicle of wave 1 emerged earlier than in ewes with the POF from wave 1 (day —1.0 vs. day 0.8, P < 0.05) and was regressing at the time of PGF2a treatment (diameter 4.1 ± 0.4 vs. 2.8 ± 0.3 mm, P < 0.05). The dominant follicle of wave 1 became POF if it was in the growing or plateau phase at the time of luteolysis. If it was already in the regress­ing phase, the dominant follicle of wave 2 became the POF.
